Remedies
"Please
Mom . . . . I'd rather do It myself"
(from a rather old commercial, but becoming more and more popular
today)
EFT
is possibly the best first aid kit you can have in your home.
Still, there are a number of conditions that other remedies for
"what ails ya" might be the best way to save a trip
to your doctor or the local emergency ward. Consider using one
of these old (and some new) methods of "Doing It Yourself"'.
It might surprise you to learn how many "home" remedies
there are to ailments that keep doctors and emergency rooms so
crowded!
Take
a few moments to consider the discomforts you consider most apt
to affect you or yours, and scan the subjects in the following
list to find possible solutions without the wait, or fear associated
with the emergency room. Our medical system isn't so overtaxed
because we can't help ourselves more, but because we don't. Learning
ways to help yourself before emergencies arrive can save much
misery later on.
In
the interest of time and common sense I'm keeping this list rather
short. The ones included here are some of the more common reasons
for doctor visits, yet often the ones most quickly relieved by
at home.
Sometime
soon, I'll include a link on this page to places you can visit
online, or books you can purchase with much broader symptom coverage.
Note:
If you're bitten by a spider and your arm swells up to twice the
size of your leg, don't logon to the Internet and rush to this
page to look for a solution. You might try a little EFT tapping
on your way to the emergency room . . . but please - go to the
emergency room! This page in no way suggests that you question
your better judgement. But, of course, you know that :o)
Hiccups
- hardly deadly, but very annoying, these peace interrupters
will usually heal themselves in a few minutes. If they don’t
however, try one of these tips:
The oldest
tip is to breathe in and out while holding a bag tightly over
your mouth. Do so quickly and for several breaths.
Pour yourself
a small glass of water, (a bottle of water works nicely for this
one too) bend over at the waist and drink the water – essentially
upside down out of one side of your mouth.
Put a teaspoon
of sugar in your mouth (diabetics know when and if they can use
this one) and swallow it as it dissolves.
Hyperventilation
- or rapid breathing is often (maybe even most often)
the result of anxiety. It usually lasts for 20 to 30 minutes,
but can feel like hours to the sufferer.
Tap on the
‘under the eye’ spot while focusing on the difficult
breathing until you feel it subside. This isn’t shameless
promoting of EFT (though that’s okay on this website :o),
but that spot connects to your stomach meridian where nervous
disorders often build momentum.
Breathe into
a paper bag. Strangely enough this helps replace carbon dioxide
which is actually depleted during rapid breathing.
If it happens
periodically to you, after you’ve quelled the
immediate problem, start practicing a little deep breathing every
day.
The
benefits to your health go well beyond reducing the risk of another
attack.
Food
Poisoning - Many 24 hour bugs, or what people often think
is a flu are quite likely food poisoning, and include symptoms
like cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting.
Just one
suggestion here, as the system has to do it’s job to relieve
your body of the toxins that are creating your discomfort. **
Drink a lot of liquids to reduce dehydration through water loss.
Water is the best re-hydrator, but flat Coca-Cola can also help
settle the stomach.
Kidney
Stones - Man, this is a good one to prepare for before
it ever happens to you or a loved one. Though most good advice
on these lovelies is in prevention (don’t overdose on calcium,
and eat vitamin A rich foods like carrots, apricots, broccoli
and cantaloupe), I’ve found a ‘cure’ that actually
worked for me, and has for a couple of others I’ve recommended
it to (though not for all).
Boil (steam)
a bunch of asparagus, and while it’s still hot, throw it
in a blender with the better part of a liter (or quart) of Coca-Cola.
Drink the whole thing down in a sitting. It completely relieved
the backache in about 3 hours, and seemed to dissolve the stone
(all symptoms gone) within about 4 or 5 hours.
Fatigue
– Even chronic fatigue is becoming common today.
We eat too much processed food, sit in front of too many TV shows,
stay up late, get up early, worry about everything, and work or
socialize in stressful environments. There aren’t a lot
of quick fixes for fatigue, but try these:
Do a little
exercise. After a meal, or any time fatigue sets in, go for a
walk, or do any exercise that boosts your metabolism noticeably.
You’ll be surprised how this can invigorate you.
Don’t
drink that next cup of coffee. As much as we ‘think’
coffee gives us a boost, its’ benefit is very short lived,
and the net result is greater fatigue.
Take a nap.
It may surprise you, but a 15 minute nap – particularly
if you can do it at the same time every day – can have amazing
recuperative power for you.
Take a one
a day multi vitamin/mineral. It’s easy to miss
essential nutrients, particularly if you’re missing meals
or eating poorly.
Depression
– This is a horrible state for humankind to ever
have to be subjected to. Knowing what to do before it hits can
help lessen the severity and duration. Once again I’d be
hard pressed to avoid recommending you learn EFT, and either practice
it on yourself, or find a good practitioner. A couple of possible
quick fixes for you are:
Find something
really boring to do. Stare at a leaf and count the veins in it
. . . 17 times! Anything incredibly boring like this will help
remove your focus from the cause of your depression.
Go for a
healthy walk, or work out. As in helping with fatigue, the endorphins
released by physical activities are ‘happy’ chemicals
and stimulate both your mood and energy level.
