(Many of these definitions are taken from "Wikipedia" - an online dictionary/encyclopedia)
Abreaction - a psychoanalytical term for reliving an experience in order to purge it of its emotional excesses; a type of catharsis. Sometimes it is a method of becoming conscious of repressed traumatic events.
Note: This term appears to be used in EFT writings to include any unusually intense reaction to therapeutic treatment.
Functional Disorder - A disorder that can't be seen on the surface, nor through blood tests, Xrays, ultrasound, EKG, EEG or other mechanical means. If a biological source can't be found for a disorder it is labelled 'functional'. Common functional disorders include fibromyalgia, (most) migraine headaches and chronic fatigue.
Insulin - an animal hormone whose presence informs the body's cells that the animal is well fed, causing liver and muscle cells to take in glucose and store it in the form of glycogen, and causing fat cells to take in blood lipids and turn them into triglycerides. In addition it has several other anabolic effects throughout the body.
(LOD) Level of Discomfort – Used to measure a patient/client’s level of discomfort on a 1 to 10 scale, with 1 being very little intensity and 10 being at your threshold of ability to cope. During an EFT session LOD is taken before and after tapping on each issue in order to determine whether or not the right approach is being used. It’s also used to determine when it’s okay to move on to the next issue.
Note: On the EFT site this is referred to as SUD’s level, or subjective units of disorder.
Core Issue – A core issue is usually an event that caused us trauma at some previous time in our lives. When something happens today that the sub-conscious mind affiliates with that past experience, it triggers a negative reaction. In energy therapy the memory of that triggering past event is the core issue.
Muscle Testing – A system for determining the presence of a psychological reversal. If a psychological reversal is in the body, the tested muscle will become weak when an answer (even if believed true by the conscious) is in conflict with the subconscious.
(PR) Psychological Reversal – This is a conflict between conscious and subconscious beliefs. For example, if you ask most smokers if they want to quit, 9 out of 10 will say, “Yes!” According to their conscious mind this is absolutely true. But dig a little deeper . . . go into their subconscious mind and you’ll find that they’re afraid to lose the relaxing effect that smoking has on them, or they’re afraid of the pain of quitting, or they (again subconsciously – and wouldn’t even believe it in their conscious mind) are afraid of losing their best friend.
A PR is a limiting belief which, unless relieved, will stop all forward progress.
(DID) Dissociative Identity Disorder – is a condition in which a single person displays multiple distinct identities or personalities (known as alter egos or alters), each with its own pattern of perceiving and interacting with the environment. The diagnosis requires that at least two personalities routinely take control of the individual's behavior with an associated memory loss that goes beyond normal forgetfulness.
(PTSD) Post Traumatic Stress Disorder – a conditioned, chronic response to a past traumatic experience. Used most commonly to describe the multiple distressing symptoms experienced by war veterans, it can be caused by any traumatic experience including rape, witnessing a terrible accident or violent act, or either mental or physical abuse. In energy therapy terms, the act that brought PTSD on caused a block in the energy system. Until this block is resolved it will cause some level of discomfort.
Apex Effect – Occasionally after receiving relief, even from an issue that’s been causing major life difficulties, a person will forget that it was an issue in the first place. It seems the most common reason for this is that removing this issue opens the door to, or now reveals another issue (with a slightly lower charge on it) that had remained hidden by the intensity of the first. Gary refers to this as having cut down one of the trees in the forest, thereby revealing the next.
Note: This is a very good reason to write your issue down and record its’ intensity at the beginning of a session. Without proof that there’s been a change, it’s difficult to even believe how powerful this therapy is, and you may well not recognize the need for further clearing.
Tail Enders - Blocks to forward movement on an issue. For example, if someone with movement restricting damage to the neck is awaiting the results of a law suit, and movement is returned to normal, the law suit may be jeopardized. Though the person may consciously want to get over the pain and restriction, subconsciously they know it's not a good idea . . . yet. Even EFT is unlikely to have a positive effect in such a case.
Pronoid - The opposite of Paranoid. Okay, so you can't find this in any dictionary . . . neither can I :o) It was coined by a speaker as a way to lower our stress level by recognising the truth, rather than dysfuncional belief about those around us. Paranoia, of course, is the belief that 'everyone is out to get me. That's what a paranoid person spends their focus time on. If they were to focus instead on the thought that 'everyone is out to help me' (pronoia), they could look forward to interaction with others with optimism rather than fear. This slight change in focus can seemingly change those around you from ogres to angels.
Homeostasis - The tendency for something to return to its' original state. If you bend a piece of flat spring steel, then let it go, it'll return to being flat instantly. If you push your finger into a piece of memory foam it will take a new shape, but return to its' original one - slowly. This characteristic has obvious uses in industry, but is included here because our bodies have regulatory systems whose function it is to bring our bodies back into balance when adversely changed by something in our environment (like squeezing a 10mm head out through a 7mm birth canal :o). That elongated head (always a mystery to me why anyone wants a picture of their child in that condition?) will very quickly return to normal, due to the bodies tendency toward homeostasis.
Complimentary Medicine - refers to a non-traditional therapy that's used in conjunction with traditional medicine in order to help with an aspect of the treatement not easily satified with just one modality. A good example of this would be where a surgeon will book physiotherapy to begin shortly after surgery. The surgery should remove the obstruction to pain relief and health, and the physiotherapy will strengthen the affected area so that the symptoms won't reoccur. So, when you 'compliment one with the other, complete healing isn't just more likely, but much quicker.
Fibromyalgia - very difficult to diagnose, fibromyalgia is a functional (non-organic) disorder sometimes determined by finding pain at the light touch of 11 or more of 18 potentially sensitive spots on the body. This is a chronic condition with few traditional solutions other than medication to relieve 'some' of the patients discomfort. Fibromyalgia symptoms, and even its cause can often be relieved or eliminated with energy therapy.
